Winter is coming: how to decorate your dorm

Publication date:

Curling up with a cup of tea and a good book is our favorite pastime in winter. However, you will agree your dorm needs some kind of refurnishing to feel at home.

Buy a blanket

Have a cozy retreat with a pair of fuzzy blankets and a coffee mug. Inviting friends over will probably require electric ones, and the more you have them to create a nice little corner, the better. Whether you are cramming for an exam, chatting on the phone or scrolling down pages, you have to be covered right.

Get a rug

Most dorm rooms do not have rugs by default, so you have to buy one in the store. Not only is it highly unhealthy to step on cold tire in winter, you can easily catch a flu if you are doing it on a regular basis. There are several types of floor covers, available for the dorm’s confined space, and depending on your budget and the size of the room, you can either purchase a full-size rug that takes up most of the floor, or choose a medium-sized one.

Opt for humidifiers

These are necessary if you live in a cold winter area with lots of snow and frosty temperatures. You put it in a room to gradually moisturize the air and reduce dryness which is unbearable in winter. If your skin is super sensitive and tends to get calloused under low temperatures, humidifier is your best choice. Besides, it helps to eliminate the nose bleeds and keep allergies away!

Control the heat

Some students do not have the opportunity to set the temperature in their dorm rooms – they have a centralized heating system that is automatized. In other cases, however, you get to choose your own climate, and if you’ve got the heat that is room by room, you can opt for the friendly temp that won’t leave you shivering or sweating when you return home after a long day. Believe us, neither Africa nor the North Pole are the options!

Add the scent

When you close all the windows and doors, the air might get a little stuffy. Is there a solution? We think we found one. You can buy a scented spray, given that most of the dorms prohibit the candle lights use. If you are prone to smells, get a plugin with a mild aroma that won’t cause allergies or headache. You won’t be able to leave your room a lot in winter, remember?

Bring the kettle

It’s basically the best life-hack ever. Bring in a kettle if you are a fan of hot mugs and can’t live without tea. This is especially true if your coffee cups aren’t microwavable and you are usually left with a cold liquid at the end of the day. Tired after a day on campus? Hot latte is coming!

Dress warm

Nobody is going to judge you for buying an extra pair of sweatpants once you are in a dorm. There is a popular myth saying the beauty queens roam the campus all year round, but the reality is far cozier: only the best sweatshirts, joggers and socks. They call it ‘homely clothes’ – zero fab, maximum warmth. And we can tell you winter is the best time to boast a new pair of tights with funny prints.

Get away for a while

We advise you to change surroundings from time to time, so that you and your roommate don’t get tired of being in each other’s company. Or you can simply retrieve to a common room to chat with other friends or read a book in a cozy retreat. Winter is the greatest time for libraries and teas (but frankly, so is summer).
