Money hacks for students. Saving money in college

Publication date:

Neither borrower nor a lender, says Shakespeare’s Polonius, and we kind of agree, but it’s hard to keep your cash in one place when you are young. So we've prepared a few moneysaving hacks that will help you stay out of debt when the college is near.

Get a cut-price

As long as you are a student, freebies and deals should be a part of your life. Even if you go to the nearest mall, it is most likely they have special prices for those in college. There is no need to spend on something you can find online via Student Hut or the VoucherCodes. Check out the possibilities that will help you find relevant offers and reasonable investments.

Go on a thrift shop tour

There are thrift shops around student residences that sell college-themed apparel with your logo written on it. They can also provide you with a decent deal if you are a top student and even have used textbooks that might be of some help later. You don't need to look down on second-hand shops, too, as they often have brand names in-store and designer labels on display. Who cares if it's not the hottest item this season – you can always spot something that fits you like second skin!

Cook in advance

Picture yourself getting ready meals ordered every night. There is no money in the world to cover that scope of needs, especially if you are a student. We advise you the following: find the recipe that's relatively easy and substantial, like pizza or lasagna, and cook a few meals in bulk. So, if there comes a time when you are too burned-out to make dinner, you can take it from the fridge and enjoy. Also, if you have residents that relish in cooking (and might be doing it slightly better than you), you can set a kitchen routine so that everyone takes turns to boil!

Follow the yellow road

Always look for those yellow discount labels on clothes and items you'd like to purchase for home. It might be hard at times, for some stores usually put the low-price tags right before they close, but if you come before 9 pm, you will be lucky! They usually reduce the cost by half, but if it’s a couple of minutes before close, you can actually bargain up to 90%, and isn't that a sweet deal?

Bring your arts to the yard

If you are one of those party people, who can't live without a good buzz, you can get yourself a unique costume by doing it yourself. Having to go to a fancy shop every time you buy clothes means you'll have a budget to spend, and that will be certainly as overpriced as it goes, for the local shop owners know how desperate students are. Can't imagine yourself without a designer label that everyone can look at? Try the stocks where the las year's collections are usually on display.

Become involved in a college life

Popular movies often show resident assistants as pompous lads who don't care if you came home last night - you have to do your work no matter what. In reality, however, this job can be quite rewarding, and competitive, too, as you go on socials, take part in most student events and generally indulge in the atmosphere of college life. Do remember, though, that these positions are usually highly competitive, so you have to work on your resume. Also, this kind of job saves you a great deal of money and can be beneficial to the point you'll get a $10, 000 a year. Who wouldn't want to work among friends and still earn some cash? Let’s get listed for the next year!
