The list of essay prompts realised by the Common App in 2016-17 consists of five points. Four of them are similar to 2015-16 prompts and only one is totally new:

  1. Some students have a background, identity, interest, or talent that is so meaningful they believe their application would be incomplete without it. If this sounds like you, then please share your story.
  2. The lessons we take from failure can be fundamental to later success. Recount an incident or time when you experienced failure. How did it affect you, and what did you learn from the experience?
  3. Reflect on a time when you challenged a belief or idea. What prompted you to act? Would you make the same decision again?
  4. Describe a problem you've solved or a problem you'd like to solve. It can be an intellectual challenge, a research query, an ethical dilemma - anything that is of personal importance, no matter the scale. Explain its significance to you and what steps you took or could be taken to identify a solution. (It has been added to the list this year.)
  5. Discuss an accomplishment or event, formal or informal, that marked your transition from childhood to adulthood within your culture, community, or family.

So slight change of the prompts is caused by the intention to allow students, parents, counselors, admissions officers discuss and fully express their views on suggested topics. Furthermore, experience shows that users of the Common Application preferred the first prompt and decided to write assay about “background, identity, interest, or talent.” 47 % of applicants opted that particular one, while the smallest number of college applicants presented essays touching a situation when they “challenged a belief or idea” – only 4 %. 17 % have chosen to write “failure” essay (the second prompt), 22 % have chosen to write about “transition from childhood to adulthood”, 10 % - about solving a problem.

The Common Application cooperates with more than 600 universities and colleges all around the world and gives a wonderful chance to apply to a wide range of school.  All you need to do is just press buttons of your computer and pay some fees if it is necessary, as the Common App also collaborates with higher educational institutions which don’t require any application fees.

In many cases the Common Application essay is the only thing required by colleges, but for such glorious universities as Yale and Harvard the Common Application essay isn’t enough, that’s why additionally you have to write their own essays. In spite of the plenty of institutions involved in the Common App there are university systems that don’t participate in it.  If that situation happens you are likely to be interviewed, as a result you need to prepare for asking tricky questions.
